First time? You'll be pedaling like a pro in minutes
Hobie kayaks are very easy to learn and much more stable than ocean or rapids kayaks. We will help with proper pedal adjustment, after which you will be pedaling in minutes. Stand-up paddleboards require a bit more balance, but are still much easier to learn than you might think. If you have never used a stand-up paddleboard, watch this brief instructional video before your first rental. See also our paddleboarding guide. For beginners, paddling within the harbor is a chance to find your sea legs and enjoy the scenery.
Where you will paddle
Rentals launch from Heritage Harbor Ottawa, a protected, low-traffic, 32-acre marina and a great spot for beginners. From there, kayak riders only may venture out to the Illinois River and enjoy 12+ scenic miles between the Marseilles and Starved Rock locks.
River safety
The Illinois River outside the marina is a commercial waterway. It offers great scenery and numerous beaches and attractions, but you will share it with recreational boaters (busier on weekends and holidays) and occasional barges.
- Stay close to shore where possible to avoid traffic and enjoy the best scenery.
- Stay well clear of barges. They move slowly but cannot stop or turn quickly, and may not see smaller watercraft.
- Remember there is a current. It is usually slow, but it will take longer to travel upstream than downstream, so plan your trip accordingly.
